Many of the Apple iPad cases that we've seen mar Apple's latest product with a bulky design that hinder the device's portability. The NuGuard is the answer to those who just want a simple, unobtrusive way to protect an iPad. These are thin cases that snap on to the back of the iPad to protect that part from scratches.

What we tested...
NewerTech NuGuard iPad Case The NuGuard is a simple protective solution for your iPad. It comes in a clear-plastic version (pictured) or in black with a leather backing. To use it, simply snap it onto the back of the device's body. It will only protect the rear, though, so if you're concerned about the screen, be sure to get a separate protective shield for that. (Most are of the peel-and-stick type.)

What we liked...
The NuGuard provides protection for your iPad without taking away the device's style. (And that's really one of the biggest reasons you bought it, right?) There's no big, bulky shell to deal with. You simply snap the NuGuard on, and it keeps a close-fitting profile. We particularly liked the clear-plastic version, as it still allows you to see the design elements of the iPad's rear (minimal as they may be).

What we didn't...
Be clear before you purchase the NuGuard that this case is only going to protect it from scratches. If you drop your iPad with this case on it, we can't see it providing too much protection. You'll also need to get a separate screen protector, as this case only covers the rear of your iPad. Also, while we appreciated the clear case not compromising the iPad's style, the NewerTech logo is still sprawled across the back. We can't fault the company for wanting to promote itself, but we would have preferred a logo-free case.

So, what's the verdict? If you're looking to protect your iPad's body from nicks and scratches without taking away its minimalist style, the NuGuard is low-profile enough to do the job. Be aware that this is for protecting from scratches only, though, and won't provide much protection if you drop your iPad.
